SWAT Standoff in Fern Creek Ends with Arrest of 19-Year-Old Suspect

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A 19-year-old man was taken into custody Saturday evening following a brief SWAT standoff in the Fern Creek neighborhood, according to the Louisville Metro Police Department.

Authorities say officers were called to the 9200 block of Vevey Road around 6:30 p.m. after reports of a domestic disturbance escalated into a barricade situation. The suspect, identified as Jayden Smith, had locked himself inside the basement of a home after allegedly forcing his way inside.

Court documents reveal that the incident began with a verbal altercation between Smith and a woman who refused to give him her bank card. Smith allegedly took her phone and left the scene, but later returned and began banging on the door before kicking in the back entrance to gain entry.

The woman fled to a nearby residence and contacted police. A second individual attempted to intervene during the confrontation, at which point Smith allegedly brandished a handgun. Police arrived shortly thereafter.

Smith retreated to the basement and refused to come out, prompting a response from the LMPD SWAT team. He surrendered to officers approximately 10 minutes after their arrival and was taken into custody without further incident.

He is facing several initial charges, including burglary, menacing, criminal mischief, and theft by unlawful taking. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
