Louisville, Ky. — A man is dead following a shooting involving an off-duty Jeffersontown police officer late Tuesday morning in a residential area of Louisville.
According to Jeffersontown Police Chief Rick Sanders, the incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. in the 10000 block of Robsion Road, near Chambers Way and Billtown Road. Authorities say police received several emergency calls reporting a man breaking windows and behaving erratically.
An off-duty officer who was nearby responded to the scene and confronted the individual. During the encounter, at least one shot was fired, fatally striking the man. The officer, who was not injured, immediately called for backup using his police radio.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and it is unclear what led to the escalation that resulted in the shooting. Investigators remained on the scene throughout the afternoon as they gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses.
Chief Sanders did not disclose whether the man was armed or if the officer attempted any de-escalation measures prior to the shooting. The incident is under investigation, and body camera footage was not available, as the officer was off-duty at the time.
The Jeffersontown Police Department has not released the name of the officer involved. Additional details are expected as the investigation continues.
