LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Eric Johnson, 47, was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a deadly drunk driving crash last year.
Johnson was convicted in connection with the death of 18-year-old Haley Hines, who was a passenger in a vehicle struck on Nov. 15, 2022. According to Louisville Metro Police, Johnson was driving under the influence when he traveled the wrong way on New Cut Road near Colonial Gardens, colliding head-on with the vehicle carrying Hines.
Hines died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the vehicle and another passenger were injured but survived.
Officers arrested Johnson at the scene after he failed to properly complete a field sobriety test and stopped cooperating with police. They noted his bloodshot eyes and detected the smell of alcohol. A “large plastic Subway cup” was also found shoved underneath Johnson’s vehicle.
Last month, Johnson pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including reckless homicide, assault, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and driving without insurance.
