Louisville Man Charged After Shooting Victim Protected by Emergency Order

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville man accused of violating an Emergency Protection Order and shooting another man remains in custody on a $500,000 bond following his not guilty plea in court on Friday.

Melvin Carter, 39, was arrested Thursday and faces charges of assault and violating the protection order, according to Louisville Metro Police.

The incident occurred on May 7 in the 2200 block of Cedar Street in the Russell neighborhood. Police reports indicate that Carter shot at a man who had an active Emergency Protection Order against him, which had been issued in January.

The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the arm and abdomen and was transported to University of Louisville Hospital, where he remains hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery, police said.

Court documents state that the victim identified Carter as the shooter.

Carter is scheduled to return to court on June 2.
