Louisville Fire Department Celebrates 167 Years of Service, Announces Recruitment Period

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Fire Department marked its 167th anniversary this Sunday, celebrating a long-standing tradition of service to the community.

According to Louisville Fire Captain Donovan Sims, the department is the third oldest professional fire department in the United States. It began in the mid-19th century with just three firehouses, 65 firefighters, 28 horses, and three steam engines serving approximately 70,000 residents.

Since then, the department has expanded significantly. Today, Louisville Fire operates out of 21 firehouses with 26 companies, responding to a wide range of emergency situations.

“We do it all,” said Capt. Sims. “It’s pretty cool to know that this history has been around for so long and we’re going to keep growing.”

In line with its growth, Louisville Fire will open applications for firefighter recruits from June 2 through July 4. The department offers a starting salary exceeding $66,000, with no college degree or previous firefighting experience required.

The minimum requirements for applicants include being at least 18 years old, possessing a high school diploma or GED, and holding a valid driver’s license.

“It is rewarding,” Capt. Sims said of the profession. “Every day is different.”

The department encourages interested individuals to apply during the recruitment period as it seeks to continue its tradition of dedicated service.
