Louisville, Ky. – A Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) officer was seriously injured in a crash Thursday afternoon near the intersection of West Hill Street and McCloskey Avenue.
According to LMPD, officers were notified of the collision just before 2 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that the on-duty officer, who was in an unmarked vehicle, was patrolling an area identified as part of the department’s Sustained Focus Improvement crime plan when the incident occurred.
Authorities said the officer was traveling eastbound on Hill Street when he entered the intersection and was struck by a pickup truck heading south on McCloskey Avenue. The truck allegedly ran a stop sign, crashing into the driver’s side of the officer’s vehicle.
The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles. Officers on the scene quickly administered first aid to both the officer and the other driver until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived. Both individuals were transported to the hospital for further treatment. While the officer sustained serious injuries, he is expected to survive. The other driver, who also suffered injuries, is expected to recover.
Further investigation revealed that the pickup truck involved in the crash had been reported as stolen. As a result, the driver was arrested, and charges are currently pending.
The crash remains under investigation by LMPD, with detectives working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
This incident marks another reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face while on duty and the challenges posed by crimes such as vehicle theft.
