Louisville, Ky. — Human remains discovered in a field behind a residence in Brandenburg have been officially identified as those of Cheryl Smalarz, according to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office.
The remains were found on Old State Road on the afternoon of May 10, after a local resident reported discovering what appeared to be human skeletal remains in a field behind their home. Brandenburg Police Department officers responded to the scene, confirmed the remains were human, and called in the Meade County coroner.
The remains were subsequently transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville for further analysis. Identification was confirmed through dental records, linking the remains to Smalarz, who had been the subject of an active missing persons investigation.
Officials say that while investigators continue to determine the cause of death, there are currently no indications of trauma or foul play associated with the remains.
The Brandenburg community and Smalarz’s family continue to seek answers as the investigation proceeds.
