Louisville, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) continues to search for a suspect following reports of gunfire near Algonquin Park Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded to calls of shots fired near the field by West Gaulbert Avenue and Catalpa Street at approximately 4:55 p.m. Police who were already working in the vicinity quickly arrived on the scene. Despite a thorough search, no victims were found.
LMPD released a photo of the alleged suspect and is asking the public to assist with identification as the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident coincided with the grand reopening of the Algonquin Park Pool, which had been closed since 2023 for a multimillion-dollar renovation. Councilwoman Tammy Hawkins, D-District 1, who helped lead efforts to restore the pool, addressed the shooting during a press conference on Monday.
“Whatever happened down there did not affect this event,” Hawkins said. “Everybody from this event went home safe. I don’t want the actions of one person to ruin what this pool means for this neighborhood.”
On Monday, dozens of residents gathered at the park to enjoy the newly renovated pool. Many echoed Hawkins’ sentiments, emphasizing that the shooting does not reflect the community as a whole.
“Man, we don’t need that down here. We don’t need that down here in this neighborhood,” said local resident Michael Bruce. “Every neighborhood has their bad apples and their good apples. Right now, we’re trying to let people understand that this, the whole neighborhood, is not a bad place to be.”
In response to the shooting, LMPD has increased patrols in parks and public spaces throughout the summer months. At least two squad cars were visible in the Algonquin Park parking lot on Monday.
“Gun violence has no place in our parks, our neighborhoods, or anywhere in our city,” LMPD stated. “The safety of our residents, especially our children and families, is our highest priority. We strongly condemn this reckless and irresponsible behavior.”
Authorities urge anyone with information related to the shooting to contact LMPD’s anonymous Crime Tip Line at 502-574-LMPD (5673) or submit tips online through the department’s Crime Tip Portal.
