New Pool Set to Open in Algonquin, While Camp Taylor Facility Faces Delays

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A long-anticipated swimming pool in Louisville’s Algonquin Park is scheduled to open next month, bringing fresh energy and recreation opportunities to the neighborhood just in time for summer. However, residents in the Camp Taylor neighborhood will have to wait a bit longer for their own upgraded facility.

City officials announced that the new Algonquin Park pool is on track to open on May 24. The facility will feature lap lanes, slides, and a climbing wall, offering local families a modern space to cool off and connect during the hot summer months.

“Sounds great, sounds great — then maybe I can go jump in the pool,” said neighborhood resident Jerry Harshaw, laughing as he stood just a block away from the active construction site. “It’ll give kids something to do for summer. Might give them a way to stay out of trouble.”

The excitement in Algonquin contrasts with growing frustration in the Camp Taylor neighborhood, where pool renovations have hit a delay. Initially slated to open in spring 2025, the new Camp Taylor facility now faces a later-than-expected summer opening due to complications from winter weather and difficult ground conditions, including rock excavation.

“It’s frustrating it wasn’t going to be open at the beginning of summer,” said Michael Clemons, who lives across from Camp Taylor Park. “I know a lot of people were looking forward to it for their kids when they get out of school.”

“There have been challenges with weather and rock, but I am hopeful that the city will find ways to expedite the work,” Raymond said. “Families in Camp Taylor and across the city were told they’d be swimming here this summer, and they deserve to see that promise kept.”

While a new opening date has not yet been announced, officials say the finished pool will be worth the wait. Plans include lap lanes, a water slide, and a play structure, bringing what Raymond called “waterpark-level amenities” for just a few dollars in entry fees.

Clemons, despite his disappointment, remains optimistic about the final outcome.

“I’ve really seen the evolution of this pool,” he said. “It just was really an eyesore for the neighborhood… It’s going to be a really cool facility when it opens.”

Until then, Louisville residents can look forward to the opening of the Algonquin pool next month — a sign that summer fun is just around the corner for at least one part of the city.
