LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Family, friends, and colleagues gathered at Fern Creek Baptist Church on Saturday to pay their respects to Metro Corrections Officer Michael Wehdah, who was tragically killed in February. The 44-year-old officer, who had only recently joined Metro Corrections, was found dead in an alley in the Russell neighborhood on February 16.
Despite an ongoing investigation, police have not yet identified any leads as to who is responsible for his death or the motive behind it. Officer Wehdah’s untimely passing has left a community grieving and searching for answers.
“We cannot find the words to offer true comfort to the family during such a time,” said LMDC Chief Jerry Collins during the service. “All we can do is pledge our undying support and promise to stand by your side from this moment forward.”
Wehdah, who had immigrated from Liberia, had earned his U.S. citizenship in December 2022 and had completed training at the Metro Corrections Academy in November of that year. He had been eager to start his career in law enforcement, having studied at the University of Louisville before dedicating himself to public service.
In addition to his family’s loss, his colleagues expressed their deep sorrow, rallying together to support those left behind. Collins, alongside the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 77, organized fundraisers to assist Wehdah’s family during this difficult time. Contributions can be made via a QR code provided at the service.
The investigation into Wehdah’s death continues, with police urging anyone with information to come forward. The Anonymous Tip Line at (502) 574-LMPD or the online Crime Tip Portal are available for those wishing to share any relevant details.
The community continues to mourn the loss of a young officer whose life was cut short, and the search for justice remains ongoing.
