LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A middle school teacher was hospitalized early Tuesday after being struck by a car during an outdoor learning session at Barret Traditional Middle School.
According to a letter sent to families by the school’s principal, Amy Strite, the incident occurred as a science class participated in a hands-on learning experience outside. During the activity, a ball rolled into the roadway, prompting the teacher to retrieve it. While crossing the street in a designated crosswalk, the teacher was hit by a passing vehicle. The driver, as reported by the school, did not see the teacher in time to avoid the collision.
Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived shortly after the incident, and the teacher was transported to the hospital. Fortunately, the teacher was conscious and speaking when paramedics arrived at the scene. The teacher’s condition has not been made public, but there has been no indication of life-threatening injuries.
The incident was witnessed by several students who were part of the science class. The school has since enlisted the help of counselors to support students affected by the traumatic event.
In her letter, Principal Strite reassured families, emphasizing that the safety of both students and staff remains the school’s top priority. “We are taking steps to support everyone affected by this event,” Strite stated.
The school community is now focusing on supporting the teacher’s recovery and addressing the emotional needs of students and staff in the aftermath of the incident. The Louisville Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Further updates on the teacher’s condition and additional details about the investigation are expected to be released as they become available.
