Water Main Break Causes Severe Flooding in South Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A significant water main break in south Louisville left approximately 11 properties without water and caused widespread flooding Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. near the intersection of 3rd and W. Kenton streets in the Wilder Park neighborhood.

According to the Louisville Water Company, the break involved a 16-inch water main, which resulted in water flooding the streets and submerging several vehicles. The area’s drainage issues exacerbated the situation, leading to severe flooding.

Residents in the affected area described the damage. Jacqueline Dixon, a local homeowner, woke up to find about three feet of water in front of her house. “I could hear it pouring in my basement,” Dixon recalled. “The next thing I know, the basement is flooded up to the top of the steps. Everything I have in the basement is a loss.”

Adam Fazliji, another local resident, said the water ruined much of his property, including his stove and furniture. His car was also partially submerged. “I opened the window and I couldn’t believe it. I called my boss and told him I couldn’t come to work because of the water,” Fazliji said.

In addition to residential damage, Southeast Christian Church’s South Louisville campus also sustained flood damage. Services at the church were canceled for the day, and it may take three to five days for crews to restore the building’s basketball gym.

“We’re focused on stabilizing the situation today, getting water extracted, and setting up equipment for further drying,” said Trevor Bunker from First Light Restoration, which is assisting with the cleanup.

As of Sunday evening, crews were still on-site working to repair the broken main and address the flooding. Louisville Water Company hopes to restore water service to affected properties by midnight. However, the company has not yet determined the cause of the pipe break.

Repair work is expected to continue into Monday as crews finish the repairs and fix the damaged roadway.
