Traffic Disruptions in Louisville After Crash on Kennedy Bridge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Traffic flow has returned to normal following a significant crash on the Kennedy Bridge Saturday afternoon, which caused major delays for motorists heading into the city. The incident, which occurred around 12:45 p.m., involved a car hauler that overturned on Interstate 65 South just off the bridge, leading to vehicles falling off the semi-trailer and blocking multiple lanes.

According to Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) spokesperson Dwight Mitchell, the accident occurred on I-65 South near the ramp to Interstate 64 West. The crash caused significant congestion as at least two vehicles were overturned on the interstate, and the semi-trailer was sprawled across all lanes of traffic.

Trimarc traffic cameras captured the chaos, showing heavy backups extending into Jeffersonville, Indiana, as southbound traffic was diverted to Interstate 64. The resulting traffic jam stretched for miles, creating difficulties for drivers trying to navigate the area.

Despite the severity of the crash, LMPD confirmed that no injuries were reported. Emergency responders, including at least two fire engines, were quickly on the scene to assess the situation and clear the wreckage.

By 6 p.m., the scene had been cleared, and traffic flow began to return to normal. The timing of the incident, just days before the Kentucky Derby, added an extra layer of urgency to the situation, as the event typically brings a high volume of visitors to the area.

The crash served as a reminder of the potential for disruption on major highways, particularly during busy times. Authorities praised the quick response from emergency services, which helped to mitigate what could have been a much worse situation.

As the weekend’s festivities continued, the incident highlighted the importance of remaining cautious on the roads, especially in high-traffic areas.
