LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A murder investigation in Middletown has taken a disturbing turn after authorities discovered an improvised explosive device (IED) beneath the victim’s car. The investigation revolves around the death of 65-year-old John McQuillen, who was reportedly shot and killed by his son, 43-year-old Brandon McQuillen. However, police believe there may have been a backup plan if the shooting had not been successful.
According to law enforcement officials, the explosive device found under John McQuillen’s vehicle was “potentially viable” and posed a significant danger. Authorities stated that the device could have detonated at any time, though they declined to comment on whether any additional explosive devices were discovered at the scene. The revelation that an IED was involved has left the community shaken, as many residents were unaware of the depth of the tension between the father and son.
Neighbors have reported seeing a black and white van—described as a converted ambulance—frequently in the area in the days leading up to the shooting. Police have confirmed that the van belonged to Brandon McQuillen, though its connection to the crime remains unclear.
John McQuillen had only recently moved into his condominium, according to Lonnie Thurman, president of the local homeowners association. Thurman recalled conversations with McQuillen in which the victim expressed concern over his strained relationship with his son, even sharing that Brandon had once threatened to kill him. “He told me about his fractured relationship with his son,” Thurman said. “He was worried about what might happen.”
Court records show that both John and Brandon McQuillen had previously filed emergency protective orders against each other, indicating a history of conflict. The father’s concerns about his son’s threats appear to have been well-founded.
The neighborhood, once known for its quiet atmosphere, is now grappling with a sense of insecurity. In response to the recent tragedy, residents have taken steps to enhance their safety.
