LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man in his 20s is in critical but stable condition after falling from a bridge into a shallow creek behind a gas station in east Louisville on Tuesday night, according to authorities.
Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS responded to the scene shortly before 8:30 p.m. in the 11000 block of Westport Road, after a 911 call was placed by an employee at the nearby Speedway gas station. The caller reported that a man had fallen from a bridge behind the store.
Upon arrival, emergency crews located the unresponsive man approximately 15 to 20 feet below the roadway, lying in only 3 to 4 inches of water. A bystander was already performing CPR when responders arrived, said department spokesperson Sal Melendez in a statement.
Fire and EMS personnel quickly took over lifesaving efforts, stabilizing the man on a backboard and transporting him to the shoreline. Due to the thick vegetation in the area, crews used chainsaws to clear a path to safely extract the victim. He was lifted using a Stokes basket and transported to University of Louisville Hospital.
The man remains in critical condition, but authorities report that his status is currently stable.
No further details have been released, and it is unclear how the man came to fall from the bridge. The incident remains under investigation.
