LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville man was sentenced on Thursday for pointing a laser at a Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) helicopter in a dangerous act that could have jeopardized the safety of the aircraft’s crew, other planes, and citizens on the ground.
Justin Freeman, 33, was sentenced to three months in jail and an additional three months on home incarceration after the incident occurred in 2023. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Freeman used a laser to target the police helicopter, an act that poses a significant threat to aviation safety.
U.S. Attorney Michael Bennett expressed his concern over the reckless behavior, stating, “This senseless act could easily have resulted in tragedy for the crew of the helicopter, other aircraft, and citizens on the ground.” He further emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for such actions, adding, “We will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to aggressively identify and charge anyone who engages in this type of criminal conduct.”
The FBI and LMPD collaborated on the investigation, which led to Freeman’s prompt apprehension. Authorities have stated that they are committed to ensuring that similar offenses are met with swift legal action in order to prevent endangering the public and law enforcement officers alike.
Pointing a laser at an aircraft, especially a police helicopter, is a federal offense due to the potential danger it poses. The harsh penalties associated with such acts highlight the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the growing issue. The case serves as a warning that those who engage in similar dangerous behavior will face significant legal consequences.
Freeman’s sentencing is a reminder that acts of recklessness that endanger public safety will not be tolerated, and authorities will continue to work together to protect the lives of those in the air and on the ground.
