Louisville, Ky. – Humana, the healthcare giant headquartered in Louisville, has announced plans to vacate its iconic Humana Tower, a primary fixture in the city since 1985. The company revealed in February 2024 that it would be transitioning its operations to two new office spaces, the Waterside building at 101 E. Main St. and the Clocktower building at 123 E. Main St. This move is expected to take approximately 18 to 24 months to complete.
In a statement released by the company, Humana confirmed that it would place the Humana Tower and adjacent properties on the 500 block of W. Main Street on the real estate market in the coming weeks. The company said it is collaborating closely with Mayor Craig Greenberg’s office, local officials, and other city agencies to explore potential future uses for the property. Humana expressed its hope that a suitable new owner would be found, allowing the building to continue contributing to the vibrancy and growth of downtown Louisville.
Despite the transition, Humana emphasized its ongoing commitment to downtown Louisville, asserting that it will “remain a strong anchor” for the city and continue to generate a positive economic impact. The new office locations, which are both modern and equipped with amenities, are expected to offer a more dynamic and centralized workspace for employees.
The Waterside building, at 40% larger than the Humana Tower, will serve as the company’s new headquarters, while the nearby Clocktower building will house a dedicated health and well-being center for employees. Additionally, the Waterside location offers ample company-owned parking, making it a convenient and attractive option for Humana’s workforce.
Humana’s decision to relocate comes during a period of leadership transition within the company. In December 2024, the company appointed Celeste Mellet as its new Chief Financial Officer, succeeding Susan Diamond, who retired after an 18-year career at Humana. Mellet now joins President and CEO Jim Rechtin in steering the company into its next chapter.
As the company sets its sights on a new era, the future of the Humana Tower remains uncertain, but it is clear that the company’s shift to a new campus is part of a broader vision to foster growth, innovation, and creativity in a modern workplace environment. The move also represents a shift for downtown Louisville, with the potential for revitalization and new opportunities for the historic Humana Tower location.
