Fire Displaces Families in Louisville’s Poplar Hills Neighborhood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several families have been displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment building in the Poplar Hills neighborhood of Louisville Thursday night. The fire occurred at the 700 block of Huntington Park Drive, off Poplar Level Road, around 8 p.m.

According to Fern Creek Fire Assistant Chief Dewayne Hutchens, crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from a two-story apartment building, with people trapped on a second-floor balcony. Firefighters quickly deployed ground ladders to rescue two individuals from the balcony, while approximately 20 firefighters helped evacuate the remaining residents.

Thanks to their swift response, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes, preventing further damage. No injuries were reported among residents or firefighters, though a family pet was treated for smoke inhalation and later returned to its owner, Hutchens confirmed.

The fire caused significant damage to one apartment unit, with several other units sustaining water and smoke damage. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In the aftermath, the American Red Cross is assisting displaced residents with temporary housing arrangements. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Residents of the complex are grateful for the quick actions of the firefighting teams, and while the fire’s origin remains unclear, the community is focusing on supporting those who have lost their homes.
