Louisville Fire Department Opens Recruitment for New Firefighters

Louisville, Ky. — The Louisville Fire Department is actively seeking new recruits to join its ranks, with applications opening June 2 and remaining available through July 4.

The department offers a starting salary of over $66,000 annually, with many firefighters earning close to $80,000 after five years of service. Importantly, no college degree or previous firefighting experience is required to apply.

Applicants must meet several basic qualifications, including being at least 18 years old, possessing a high school diploma or GED, maintaining a clean criminal record, and holding a valid driver’s license.

Captain Donovan Sims of the Louisville Fire Department emphasized the department’s commitment to growth following its recent 167th anniversary on June 1. “We serve the city of Louisville at large—from house fires to structural collapse rescues, and as we all know, big bridge rescues. We do it all,” Sims said. “It is pretty cool to know that this history has been around for so long, and we are going to keep growing.”

The department also stressed its desire to build a diverse workforce that reflects the community it serves. “We want our department to look like our community,” Sims said. “If you have the inkling, a thought that this is something you want to get into, apply. Don’t wait.”

Firefighters work on a 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off, cycling continuously through this three-day rotation. The job comes with numerous benefits including retirement eligibility after 25 years of service, paid vacation, tuition reimbursement, health insurance, and more.

Those interested in pursuing a career in firefighting are encouraged to apply during the recruitment period starting June 2.
