Water Main Break Causes Major Flooding in South Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A significant water main break early Sunday morning left several properties in south Louisville without running water and caused widespread flooding in the Wilder Park neighborhood. The break, which occurred near the intersection of 3rd and W. Kenton streets around 8:30 a.m., submerged vehicles and led to major damage for local residents and businesses.

According to Louisville Water Company, the break resulted in approximately 11 customers losing water service, including several homes, a business, and a small apartment complex. The company also reported that drainage issues in the area worsened the flooding, exacerbating the already challenging situation.

One local resident, Jacqueline Dixon, woke up to find her front yard covered in three feet of water. “I could hear it pouring in my basement, the next thing I know, the basement is flooded up to the top of the steps. Everything I have in the basement is a loss,” she said.

Adam Fazliji, another resident, described the damage to his property. The water destroyed his stove and furniture, and even reached half of his car. “I opened the window and I said, ‘What is this? I can’t believe it.’ I called my boss and said I can’t come to work—there’s a lot of water,” Fazliji explained.

The water main break also affected Southeast Christian Church’s South Louisville campus, where services were canceled, and the basketball gym sustained significant damage. Trevor Bunker from First Light Restoration, the company hired to manage the cleanup, explained the response efforts: “Today is just stabilizing, getting water extracted, and then getting equipment set. We’ll be back in the morning to check the moisture readings and set more equipment to remove all the water and moisture.”

Louisville Water crews worked throughout Sunday to address the break, and the company hopes to restore water service by midnight. However, the damage to the area and the need for continued repair work suggests that crews will need additional time to fix the roadway and fully resolve the situation.

At this time, the cause of the water main break remains unknown. Louisville Water officials have not yet determined what led to the rupture, but they have assured residents that repairs are underway and service will be restored as quickly as possible.

Crews are expected to continue their work throughout Monday to finalize the repairs and ensure the safety of the area.
